The Utica Water and Power Authority (UWPA), Union Public Utilities District (UPUD) and City of Angels Camp (COA) are in the process of developing a Multi-Jurisdictional Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (MJHMP). Once complete, this plan qualifies the agencies to apply for millions in grant funding from state and federal sources. All three agencies are members of a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) and are equal partners in this planning process.
The JPA encourages community members to attend a MJHMP virtual town hall meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday Nov. 17, 2020. The meeting will be streamed live at facebook.com/CalaverasOES, on the Calaveras OES YouTube channel, and can be joined via Zoom at https://zoom.us/j/95510669495?pwd=OGlXalVIMTBNRG5XeGN6czA2UFNkZz09 by calling (669) 900-6833, meeting ID: 955 1066 9495, passcode 567295.
In order to complete MJHMP planning process, input from the public is also needed to help identify hazards in the Murphys and Angels Camp area. Community members who are willing to help with this important effort are asked to go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/UWPAHazardMitigation to complete a survey where various natural hazards can be ranked. Cameras on smart phones can be used to scan the QR code included on this release to bring up the survey in a Web browser.
Participants will be asked to identify natural hazards in the area and preparedness actions they have taken, or may take, to prepare for disasters. Natural hazards include, but are not limited to: wildfire, flooding, drought, earthquakes, landslides, climate change, extreme heat/cold/wind.
Hazard mitigation is the effort to take proactive measures to lessen the impact of disasters and reduce the loss of life and property. By understanding what natural hazards residents in Calaveras County face and how those hazards can impact the county by damaging or destroying property or injuring people, the JPA can look for ways to protect people and property from the impact of these hazards.
